Lithium-ion batteries are inside so many devices now.
They are powerful and light, they hold charge for long periods, they dont need to be cycled from full to empty before recharging, they deliver a consistent power at all times. Compared to most of the previous battery technology they are streets ahead and they make life easier for everyone. But they do need to be treated carefully, especially on board.
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch MAIB estimates up to 40% of recent boat fires were linked to devices with Lithium-ion batteries. These are not your professionally installed LFP or LifePo4 battery banks going up in flames: its more likely a charging mobile phone, a vape or a tool battery that goes into meltdown and starts a fire.
Always use original batteries and chargers
Replace them with genuine parts or trusted brands if you need to
Never damage batteries or immerse them in water
Never use a battery, device or charger that is damaged or has problems
Don’t cover chargers or devices while they are plugged in
The Boat Safety Scheme has a leaflet covering Lithium-ion safety – you can see it here,
